The Rum Diary

Contain spoilers:
The movie is about a novelist, named Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) who went to Puerto Rico to find a job as a journalist. In the company, the boss asked him to write astrology column.

There, he was offered to write a "white lies" articles about a rich guy called Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart) that will build hotels and resorts in the island, make it looks like, it's good to build the hotel, but the fact, hotel buildings will destroy the nature. He was tempted by the offer because of the money and he also have no choice not to take it, to see at the middle of the story, Sanderson get him out of jail because of some issues with local people.

In the end, he tried to reveal a story about what Sanderson in relation with hotel buildings in Puerto Rico. That happened also because Sanderson doesn't like the fact that they went to a party, and his girlfriend doesn't want to go back with him, and Sanderson try to cut connection with Paul Kemp. At that point, he realized he need to do something to publish the story.

The company closed, they cannot do anything, at the end of the story, Paul Kemp sailed back to NY to try to publish the story.

My impression of this movie? All the way, things that I can remember is people drinking alcohol/rum? (Of course, the movie called The Rum Diary), I would've thought they have other meaning into it. It shows voodoo practice in Puerto Rico, which is a bit weird when it's described, and looks like they don't have enough budget for the film, because at the end, Paul Kemp tried to go back to NY and publish the story is not described further like a movie, instead it's just a paragraph written with Paul Kemp leaving Puerto Rico as the background. I think in overall, the actors are great, but the story seems unfinished. Maybe I should try to read and see if anything changed my mind from the way I see the movie. I'll give 2 - 2.5 stars for this movie.
